El Tiempo Cantina

Tex-Mex cuisine, a regional fusion of Mexican and American (specifically Texan) culinary traditions, is defined by its heavy reliance on ground beef, yellow cheddar cheese, wheat flour tortillas, and distinct spices like cumin and chili powder. The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation Boulevard in Houston’s East End, is where “Mama” Ninfa Laurenzo first popularized chargrilled sliced beef into handmade flour tortillas, also known as ‘fajitas’ in 1973. Add queso and margaritas to the mix, and you’re in for a great time!

Naturally, the city saw more Tex-Mex restaurants, including El Tiempo Cantina (multiple locations), Lupe Tortilla, Teotihuacan Mexican Cafe (multiple locations), and Irma’s Original. In Downtown, visit the recently opened El Tiempo Cantina at POST and indulge in authentic Tex-Mex! Try their tacos, tamales, chalupas, enchiladas, savory fajitas, quail, baby back ribs, jalapeño sausage, fresh fish, and spicy bacon-wrapped shrimp.

Crawfish and Noodles

Crawfish & Noodles

Chef Trong Nguyen pioneered Viet-Cajun crawfish in Houston before it was a movement. What started as a bold fusion of Vietnamese flavors and Louisiana seafood culture became a Houston institution — featured on Netflix, Food Network, Travel Channel, and loved by locals and visitors since day one. Come try the flavorful crawfish with a variety of Vietnamese sides. The menu also includes traditional Vietnamese dishes such as stir-fried noodles and fried rice as well as classic seafood staples (oysters, shrimp, clam, fried catfish). Other offerings: tamarind blue crab, crawfish fried rice, and crispy frog legs sauteed in butter.

Alora

Alora (2502 Dunlavy St., Houston, TX 77006) is a Peruvian-Vietnamese fusion restaurant (pictured above). Alora, “beautiful dream” in Latin, delivers on that vision. A crisp green papaya salad gets depth from Peruvian spice, while pork belly bánh mì is dressed with ají amarillo aioli. Lomo saltado—the stir-fried beef dish beloved in Peru—is punched up with Vietnamese wok fire, while Southern fried fish lands with a mango rocoto slaw. On the bar menu: a Pho-Quila layers pho-aroma infused reposado tequila and lime. The Hanoi Quarter turns lychee and grapefruit into something bright and celebratory. Even the Alora Mai Tai arrives with its own personality as it’s topped with a cloud of pineapple foam! Alora feels like an only-in-Houston creation, where cultures don’t just brush shoulders—they collide, and something entirely new emerges.
