In celebration of Earth Day, FIFA is highlighting a major sustainability initiative tied to the FIFA World Cup 2026™, including efforts already underway here in Houston.

In partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, FIFA is supporting large-scale reforestation and community tree planting projects across all 16 Host Cities, with Houston among the cities that have already activated local efforts alongside Trees for Houston.

A community tree-planting event took place on March 27 at Browning Elementary School in the Heights, where 38 trees were planted to support neighborhood needs, including flood mitigation, improved air quality, reduced urban heat, and expanded tree canopy.

With more than 250,000 trees already planted across North America and additional projects continuing through the tournament, the initiative highlights how the World Cup is driving long-term community impact.
In total, the initiative will deliver 19 forest projects and 20 community planting events, supported by 24 local partners. The reforestation work is projected to span more than 2,000 acres, roughly equivalent to 1,000 football pitches.
