Passengers flying out of George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) on Tuesday, October 22, will be the first to experience the new Terminal D-West Pier. This expansion adds 160,000 square feet to Terminal D, for a total of 499,650 sq. feet—making it three times bigger than the field at Minute Maid Park.

This highly anticipated airport expansion features six new gates—D1 through D6—that can simultaneously accommodate wide-body aircraft and can be converted to accommodate 10 narrow-body airplanes. This significant expansion will support increasing demand from passengers and airlines while enhancing the overall travel experience, further solidifying Bush Airport's position as a major global aviation hub.

Get ready to feel relaxed at West Pier! Its stylish architectural details, modern design, works of art, and amenities set the right tone for you to enjoy the place. Many of them have been inspired by Houston´s spirit of ingenuity and innovation. Look at the Copper Feature Ceiling (photo above)! It was inspired by sunlight filtered through the live oak tree canopies found around Houston. The openings are meant to filter daylight from the clerestory above, and the custom-angled, elliptical tabs reflect different viewpoints of light similar to the leaves of the oaks. The copper ceiling is not merely a visual delight; it also pays homage to the region's rich history. Copper, known for its durability and timeless beauty, is a nod to Houston's resilience and strength.

West Pier will delight you with eight new, Houston-inspired works by local artists. These works will boost your mood and further solidify Houston's award-winning reputation as having the World's Best Airport Art Program. The eight new artworks you'll see at Terminal D-West Pier are the first of many installations planned for IAH as part of the airport's extensive redevelopment project.

The multi-million-dollar investment is a collaboration between Houston Airports, the City of Houston's Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs, and the Houston Arts Alliance. The installations at each new gatehouse were created by Houston-area artists, reflecting the welcoming nature of Houston, a city known for its distinct culture and rich diversity. An international Latina artist was chosen at each end of the new Terminal D-West Pier, referencing Houston's position as the gateway to Latin America.
