Want to experience Houston's creative vibe? Don't miss a visit to the Archway Gallery. This longest-running artist-owned gallery in Texas is hitting the big 5-0 in 2026! To celebrate, they’re rolling out a special exhibition called Fifty Forward, opening April 11, 2026. That’s fifty years of bold creativity, tight-knit community vibes, and a fierce dedication to Houston’s art scene. Archway artists have been blazing their own trail for five decades, turning the gallery into a beloved Houston arts hub. Back in 1976, a dozen local artists wanted their own space to shine, so they opened Archway at the Jung Center (yep, that’s where the name comes from—the arches!). Over time and several locations later, the gallery’s still standing strong—thanks to the passion and teamwork of more than 200 artists who’ve called it home, even as other galleries have come and gone.
Founding member Stephanie Nadolkski puts it best: “I cannot count the many ways Archway contributed to my artistic and professional career. All the artists were there for support and inspiration, and loyal collectors became friends, adding layers of dimension to my personal and professional growth.”
Longtime patron Marcia Faschingbauer remembers stumbling upon Archway at The Jung Center—and it’s been a thread running through her life ever since. “It is a deeply welcoming, inclusive place where you truly get to know the people behind art, reflecting the cultural diversity and creative spirit that defines Houston itself. Having survived storms, a pandemic, and decades of change, Archway Gallery continues to evolve without ever becoming stale, even with its tremendous history and legacy. Congratulations to artists past and present whose big hearts continue to connect and inspire us,” she says. Decades of art, friendships, and memories—all under one roof.

Fifty Forward: A Portrait of the Past, Present & Future
The Fifty Forward anniversary show is all about the artists who are shaping Archway’s next chapter. You’ll find a wall of self-portraits by current members—a lively tribute to creativity and togetherness—as well as fresh work from everyone in the group. Visitors can even leave a wish for Archway’s future, and one lucky submission will snag a $500 gift certificate during the party.
It all kicks off with a public party on Saturday, April 11. Attendees are invited to raise a glass, honor the artists and their work, and look back on fifty years of creative community. Mingle with the artists, swap stories about Archway’s history, and don’t miss the champagne toast and special remarks at 6:30 p.m. (2305 Dunlavy, Houston, TX 77006).
A Legacy Rooted in Community

Archway is famous for its diverse art and open-door vibe. There’s always an artist around, happy to chat and bring visitors into the creative process. Art here feels personal, connected, and welcoming—just like the gallery itself. That’s what keeps people coming back. Local art gives a city its voice. John Slaby, a longtime member and current Treasurer, sums it up: “If there is no local art, then there is no voice for us. It would be as if we never existed. In the distant future, if people can experience our art, they will have a sense of what it was like to live here. We leave a legacy. And the deeper the art, the deeper is that legacy.”
A Cooperative Model That Endures
At Archway, creativity is a lifelong journey—and everyone pitches in to keep things running. Artists take care of everything, making the gallery a lively, ever-evolving space. Monthly shows keep things fresh, and Archway gives back through projects like Empty Bowls Houston and its Annual Juried Exhibition for non-member artists. As longtime member Harold Joiner puts it: “Archway Gallery’s evolution over 50 years is utterly amazing. To know that the original small group of artists has now expanded into more than 30 creatively eclectic minds—still succeeding in a rapidly changing world—is astounding. Archway artists are like a family, sharing their warmth and friendliness with all who visit. Being part of the Archway family has been rewarding beyond measure.”

Fifty years in, Archway’s energy and creative spirit are going strong. The gallery is still buzzing with music, dance, poetry readings, figure drawing, and all sorts of community events—proving that the arts are alive and open to everyone in Houston. Come celebrate all year long! The fun starts with Homecoming, a group show at The Jung Center (5200 Montrose Blvd., Houston, TX 77006), where Archway got its start, featuring art from past and present members. Homecoming runs from March 4 to April 14, with a public reception on March 14 from 5 to 7 p.m.
For half a century, Archway Gallery artists have brought their creativity to Houston—past, present, and future. Their work offers a unique window into the city, inspiring art lovers and creators for generations to come.
Archway Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Monday. To learn more about the artists, explore upcoming exhibitions or purchase art, visit archwaygallery.com.
