Houston’s Premier Sports and Entertainment Complex Goes Back to Its Historic Roots
NRG Park, Houston’s premier sports, convention, and entertainment complex, home to the Houston Texans and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™, has been renamed Reliant Park as of August 1, 2026. The complex was originally named Reliant Park when it first opened in 2002, and the rebrand marks a meaningful moment for the city's cultural identity.
In 2009, Reliant Energy, a major retail electricity provider in Texas, was acquired by NRG Energy Inc., and the complex, which spans 350 acres and comprises a stadium, convention center, sports arena, and the Astrodome, was renamed after NRG Energy.

This time around, however, Houstonians inspired the name change, according to Brad Bentley, Head of NRG Consumer and Reliant. Recent surveys showed that about 90% of Houstonians supported the name change, with many saying they had always referred to it as such.
Before the area became known for its current attractions, it was home to the Astrodome, the nation’s first dome-shaped, fully air-conditioned multi-purpose stadium when it opened in 1965. Due to its innovative design, it earned the nickname the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” It was the home to the MLB Houston Astros and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and hosted its last ticketed event in March 2002: a sold-out George Strait concert with a record attendance of 68,226.

The world-class Reliant Stadium we know today has hosted several major events, including Super Bowls XXXVIII (2004) and LI (2017), and the 2024 College Football National Championship, and, more recently, seven matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
As the city gears up for the return of the Reliant name, it’s an exciting time for fans and visitors alike. This year marks the Houston Texans’ 25th anniversary season, which is perfectly timed since Reliant Stadium is where they began. Plus, the complex is set to host several more major events this year, including the Karol G. tour, The International Gem & Jewelry Show, and The Texas Bowl. It’s a great time to be in Houston!
