After suffering heavy damage in late 2010 when a fire broke out next door, Agora reopened to much fanfare in January 2011. Situated in what was once a large home fronting Westheimer, this Greek-owned coffee shop and meeting place boasts a mix of European expats and low-key neighborhood regulars.
Not a lot has changed with the post-fire renovation. There's a distinct smell of new wood in the largely exposed-wood interior and there's additional parking (a blessing considering this is one of the busier sections of Westheimer). Agora's old world-meets indie vibe continues to be a haven for Houston's hipster set and college students looking to study or just hang out.
There are ample tables and chairs with couches and conversation-starting tchotchkes scattered throughout. Up the steep staircase, cozy seating areas and a large-screen TV offer a quiet respite. The selection of coffee drinks is vast and an assortment of wine and beer, and light menu items round out the offerings.
Agora has a wide array of non-traditional items, such as Greek yogurts and cheeses and specialty pastries.
