Owner Cory Xiong strived to develop a Chinese restaurant in Houston that would set her apart from the rest, and she has done just that with Mala Sichuan Bistro. This Heights location in M-K-T is the third location.
Mala Sichuan Bistro has made a name for itself with a few of its signature dishes. All of the tilapia dishes featured on the menu – which is nearly a dozen – utilize tilapia that is freshly kept in the fish tanks at the restaurant.
A must have menu item is the Dan Dan noodles. It boasts enough of the Mala heat to wake up your taste buds, but is not overwhelming. Other star dishes include the Pot Roasted Prawns, House Special Cold Noodles and the Funky Stick Chicken
Mala is the tingling sensation associated with the heat from eating Sichuan peppercorns, and the food definitely reflects its name. Xiong’s father travels to China to select the source of the peppercorns himself. They are devoted to providing quality ingredients to their customers, even if it means their prices may be a tad bit higher than other Chinatown restaurants.
