Houston has much to offer with a vibrant arts scene—from traditional museum and gallery experiences to urban art, pop art, folk art, immersive art experiences, and underground art (literally and otherwise). The city is so large that it can be hard to know where to find a specific art experience. Here is a handy reference guide for your art journey in Houston to explore new art experiences and established local favorites.

The hotly anticipated Meow Wolf Radio Tave opened its doors to the public in October 2024. This permanent new art installation will immerse you in a surreal radio station, an interdimensional experience for all ages in Houston's historic Fifth Ward. Born in Santa Fe in 2008 as an underground art collective, Meow Wolf retains numerous full-time artists on staff who work in a huge range of media, including sculpture, painting, fabrication, digital art, writing, and film. Meow Wolf collaborates with many local artists to bring each exhibition to vibrant life, and Houston's radio station exhibit is no exception. GONZO247, a Houston native and pioneer in the graffiti and street art movement in Houston, worked for Meow Wolf’s Houston outpost as an artist liaison. The most musically focused Meow Wolf location to date features the ETNL radio station, a Cowboix Dive Bar, and Obsidiodyssey, a permanent multi-room retrofuturistic installation. Want to defy convention and blur the lines between reality and fantasy? Radio Tave is the perfect place to be. This is Meow Wolf´s fifth permanent installation in the U.S., and it stands out as an experience unlike anything the collective has created before. View details here.

The nation's largest creative campus includes over 600 tenants, including local artists, creative businesses, and restaurants. An entire day can easily be filled on this campus, extending over several buildings, including taking in a theater production, attending an art class, drinking locally made craft beer, or viewing any current art exhibitions or open studios. The Sawyer Yards campus is home to many murals by local, national, and international artists. Some have been commissioned by the property owners and Sawyer Yards, but the majority of the murals, including all of the works in the Art Alley, were organized and coordinated by UP Art Studio in conjunction with their city-wide annual mural festival: Big Walls, Big Dreams. More details about Sawyer Yards here.

Houston, in a demonstration of its cultural spirit, has embraced this graffiti park, which has become a tourist attraction as well as a multipurpose event space. Located in East Downtown, across the freeway from George R. Brown Convention Center, this outdoor gallery presents a wide range of subject matter within these murals painted by countless local artists. These art walls have been a backdrop for music videos and a popular location for art and art-related local vendor events. Attending mural festivals includes the opportunity to mingle with famous graffiti artists. Truly an ever-changing and unique street art environment!

Founded by Donald Tucker, Hardy & Nance is an artist-owned and operated event space catering to the visual and performing arts within Houston's historic Art Warehouse District. Some of the buildings in this area have been home to area artists for as many as 60 to 70 years, putting it among the oldest remaining urban art colonies in America. These studios support emerging as well as established artists and host local residencies for painters, sculptors, jewelry designers, videographers and photographers. Hardy and Nance Studios frequently curates art events in their gallery space, often with a focus relevant to current issues. All the activities and events at Hardy & Nance, including the Open Studio events, are the product of the artists themselves. Expect relatable art, and take your time in viewing this studio space.

No one might think of a brewery as a prime place to find beautiful art, but the walls of this brewery outside and inside have been decorated by talented muralists. Across the brewery’s parking lot are two huge buildings covered with colossal-sized painted walls. An array of art styles create wonderful backdrops for photographs with family or friends all while enjoying a locally brewed craft beer and an extensive tasty menu. The beer garden includes a very large patio, with comfortable seating and play areas to support a fun visit for all ages. Continuing its involvement in the Houston arts scene, Saint Arnold Beer Garden & Restaurant has also just started its very own art festival, Arts and Drafts, featuring work by local artists.
