Houston is the best culinary city in Texas and one of the best in the South.
That's according to the readers of Southern Living magazine, who ranked the top ten tastiest towns in the region in a massive, multi-week online poll. Houston came in at No. 6 with 14,321 votes. Readers ranked Lafayette as the No. 1 food city.
The contest and the winning cities will be featured in the April issue of Southern Living, out on newsstands next week. In their write-up on Houston, the magazine's editors discuss the city's "diverse ethnic scene, from Mexican to stellar sushi to some of the best Vietnamese in the country." The piece also showcases the breadth of Houston's restaurant talent, from veterans such as Robert Del Grande of Cafe Annie to innovators Morgan Weber and Ryan Pera of Revival Market.
There's even a section on the "perfect eating day" in Houston that sends foodies on a culinary adventure to spots like Bryan Caswell's Reef and Anita Jaisinghani's Pondicheri.
As for an iconic dish inspired by the food scene of Houston, Southern Living offered up a recipe for Vietnamese barbecue tacos.
